Reasons not to eat shellfish. 1.11.2019

Vibrio vulnificus is a gram negative rod that most often causes severe soft tissue infections or septicemia in patients who are immunocompromised (including cirrhosis commonly on the boards, CKD, diabetes and any other immunocompromising condition can predispose however) after eating or handling raw shellfish. It has a high morbidity and mortality if not recognized and treated promptly. IV antibiotics that have been shown to be most efficacious include: fluoroquinolone (commonly ciprofloxacin) + 3rd generation cephalosporin OR tetracycline (commonly doxy or minocycline) + 3rd generation cephalosporin. For soft tissue infections prompt surgical evaluation is needed.
